ENVIRONMENT: Utility Accountability

Utility accountability is one of the most pressing issues in environmental justice today. Due to the entitled and greedy practices of utility companies, like Xcel Energy, our beautiful Colorado environment is being put at risk.

That is why ProgressNow Colorado is working towards green energy solutions with the help of our partners, in the state and across the nation. Since 2024, PNC has been working with the Clean Up Xcel coalition to bring attention to major Public Utilities Commission (PUC) proceedings. The main targets for this project are the Just Transition Solicitation (JTS), Gas Infrastructure Plan (GIP), and federal 202c energy orders.

Though unique in their own ways, the main goals of each of these projects has been to promote public awareness of and participation in utility issues. Most of Colorado are Xcel energy ratepayers and are being impacted by these issues– often without our knowledge. We’ve produced educational videos and supported digital organizing to bring the Colorado progressive movement together in favor of renewable energy and heating solutions.

Through these projects we’re not only bringing attention to environmental justice, but to the intersecting comorbidities affecting economic, civil rights, and public health issues that follow fossil fuel usage.

Creating pressure on the PUC to move to green solutions is informed by our belief that everyone deserves freedom, opportunity, and security. The freedom from overbearing utility companies, opportunity for a healthy and happy life, and security in health and finances. No one should be forced to bear the economic or environmental burden of the extractive and dangerous practices of a major utility monopoly.

These environmental projects are precedent setting moments that will go down in Colorado history. PNC is dedicated to making sure our state is on the smart, fair, and compassionate path to utility accountability.
