DENVER: Following the shocking denial by federal immigration officials that the arrest of Durango resident Fernando Jaramillo-Solano and his two children on their way to school was a mistake after first admitting they targeted the wrong man, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, joined Colorado lawmakers from both parties in demanding the family’s immediate release from federal incarceration in Texas.

“ICE briefly admitted they arrested the wrong man, but then reverted to the usual Trump policy of never admitting a mistake,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Sara Loflin. “Fernando Jaramillo-Solano is an asylum seeker with no criminal record who along with his two innocent children were snatched from the street in Durango on their way to school. The family was arrested by ICE due to Jaramillo-Solano ‘matching the description’ of another target, which is blatant racial profiling, and then held in custody even after ICE realized they had made a terrible mistake.”

“The arrest of Fernando Jaramillo-Solano and his children should deeply trouble Republicans like Rep. Gabe Evans, who says the Trump administration should target ‘gangsters not grandmas,’” said Loflin. “Despite this, Evans has been silent about Jaramillo-Solano’s wrongful arrest and detention.”

“With Colorado’s U.S. Senators demanding answers, the Trump administration is now taking back their admission that Fernando Jaramillo-Solano’s arrest was a mistake,” said Loflin. “The administration is making a mockery of due process everyone is entitled to under the law, and punishing an innocent family for the crime of having brown skin. Voters turned out in force Tuesday to punish conservatives for Trump’s lawless arrogance and cruelty, and this terrible mistake compounded by arrogance will only add to the public’s outrage at the Trump administration and the Republican Party in next year’s elections.”

“Free Fernando Jaramillo-Solano and his children now,” demanded Loflin. “Nothing is more un-American than mistakenly imprisoning families and then refusing to rectify this grave error out of political spite.”
