DENVER:
After deliberation and a review of the arguments for and against Proposition 137, the board of directors of ProgressNow Colorado, the state's largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, voted today to change the organization's position on the measure from "neutral" to "support" in this year's Progressive Voters Guide.

"The Board of Directors' decision on statewide ballot measures comes after appropriate deliberation, and we're grateful for its guidance and support as we put together this year's Progressive Voters Guide," said Alan Franklin of ProgressNow Colorado. "After hearing the arguments and consulting with stakeholders, the board voted today to change our position on Proposition 137 from 'neutral' to 'support.' With this change, we're pleased to have definitive recommendations for every statewide measure on the Colorado ballot this year."

Proposition 137 would allocate a portion of existing sales tax revenue to conservation efforts without raising taxes. The measure would direct sales tax revenue from sporting goods toward protecting the environment, including conserving and maintaining state land and forests, preventing wildfires, and supporting outdoor recreation, an estimated $175 million annually.

"Colorado's elected Democratic leadership, including the next governor Phil Weiser and Senate President James Coleman, agree that Proposition 137 will meet critical needs without impacting the state's General Fund," said Franklin. "The intent of Proposition 137 isn't to tie the hands of legislators or limit investment in healthcare and education, and lawmakers agree the measure doesn't do that. Proposition 137 is on the ballot for one reason: to address the growing threats posed by drought and wildfires to communities across the state."

"For these reasons, and since you can't vote 'neutral,' we're thrilled to stand up in support of Proposition 137," said Franklin. "Better late than never."
