Vote NO on Amendment 83: the sneaky power grab disguised as a "right to hunt and fish"

This week, we're back to warn you about another bad idea headed for a statewide vote in Colorado this November: Amendment 83, the so-called "Constitutional Right to Hunt and Fish."

In Colorado, we understand that managing our state's wildlife and the natural environment they depend on is a complicated subject. Amendment 83 is the product of out-of-state special interests, led by an international trophy-hunting group based in Wisconsin. Other backers of Amendment 83 include the Safari Club International of Washington, D.C., and the far-right activist group Turning Point USA. These groups have already poured more than $2 million into the campaign to pass Amendment 83.

The goal of these out-of-state special interests is to undermine the authority of Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials to conduct science-based management of Colorado's wildlife resources.

Amendment 83 would permanently enshrine a "right to hunt" into the Colorado Constitution, and declare hunting and fishing the "preferred means" of managing wildlife. This constitutional amendment would override future attempts to properly regulate these activities. Instead of experts at Colorado Parks and Wildlife making these important decisions, Amendment 83 would lead directly to costly court battles paid for by taxpayers.

The campaign to stop Amendment 83 is a true grassroots effort fighting wealthy special interests who want to do something terrible in our state. Amendment 83 is another abuse of the initiative process to deceive voters into supporting a policy they would be outraged to see our elected officials endorse.

Hunting and fishing are legal in Colorado and part of our shared heritage. Coloradans support hunting and fishing as part of the responsible management of our priceless natural resources. Amendment 83 takes wildlife management in Colorado in the wrong direction.
