DENVER: Responding to Gov. Polis’ call for a special session primarily to address a billion-dollar deficit in this year’s state budget created by federal cuts passed by Republicans in Washington and signed into law by President Donald Trump, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, released the following statement:

“There is only one reason why Colorado faces a billion-dollar hole in this year’s budget, and it’s the choices made by Republicans like Gabe Evans doing the bidding of Donald Trump and Mike Johnson,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Sara Loflin. “Trump and his cronies like Colorado’s freshman Rep. Gabe Evans have inflicted this immense pain on Colorado working families, and now it’s up to us to try to minimize the harm.”

“Lying conservatives like Barb Kirkmeyer, who helped write the state budget that her buddies in Washington just busted by a billion dollars, are already spinning a false narrative to cover for her friends like Gabe Evans,” said Loflin. “But they can’t lie and spin away what everyone watched Congress just do. Colorado families are suffering because of the Trump budget and will continue to pay the price. This special session is about reducing the pain as much as possible. Instead of blaming the people of Colorado, Barb Kirkmeyer should be pointing the finger at her former colleague Gabe Evans—who helped craft the devastating cuts to Medicaid, and voted for the SNAP and clean energy tax credit cuts in the federal budget bill. Certainly Sen. Kirkmeyer has Gabe Evans’ phone number. She might have more luck finding him than his constituents.”

“There is no good news in today’s announcement of a special session,” said Loflin. “Colorado didn’t vote for this, and we will lead the nation next year once again as an outraged nation holds the Party of Trump accountable at the polls.”
