DENVER: As the shutdown of the federal government stretched into its third day with threats escalating from the White House and public opinion polls overwhelmingly blaming Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington for the escalating crisis, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest multi-issue progressive advocacy organization, called for lawmakers to reject misinformation and come together to support what all parties say they want: keeping health care affordable for millions of Americans.
“Three days into the latest Trump government shutdown, the public polling is clear: Republicans have lost the support of the American people,” said ProgressNow Colorado executive director Sara Loflin. “After the passage of the disastrous federal budget bill, millions of Americans are facing massive increases in their health insurance premiums beginning next year–in Colorado, 28% or even higher. Even Republicans like Rep. Jeff Hurd say they want to restore the premium tax credits they voted to cut in the Big Horrible Bill. But instead of doing the right thing, Hurd is joining Trump, Gabe Evans, and fellow Republicans telling lies about what Democrats are fighting for.”
“Republicans continue to lie to Americans about what is at stake in these ‘negotiations,’ and the public doesn’t buy it,” said Loflin. “Voters blame Republicans for this latest shutdown because they know who has their best interests at heart in this political standoff. This is about saving affordable health care for millions of Americans, preventing personal economic catastrophe, and directly saving American lives. Some Republicans like Jeff Hurd understand that they made a terrible mistake voting for the Big Horrible Bill. Others like Gabe Evans should realize that their political future hangs in the balance and stop repeating Speaker Mike Johnson’s lies. This is their chance to undo the harm they did in June. If they refuse to support ending this standoff with a deal to extend the ACA premium tax credits, the voters will remember in November of 2026.”
