YES on Proposition NN: Let's invest in Colorado's kids

If you follow Colorado politics, you already know that the state struggles every year to keep the promises we've made to our kids.

Experts estimate that Colorado's public schools are underfunded by $4,600 per student every year, year after year. Colorado ranks 43rd in the country in school funding, and 41st in the country for starting teacher pay. As this chronic shortfall piles up, our kids pay the price with overcrowded classrooms, underpaid teachers, and reduced academic achievement.

Colorado's education funding crisis didn't start overnight. Decades ago, voters narrowly passed the TABOR revenue cap that arbitrarily limits the state's ability to invest in priorities like public education. While Colorado's population has grown and the cost of everything has increased, TABOR prevents Colorado from making the investments to meet these growing needs.

This election, Colorado voters have the chance to put public schools first once again. Proposition NN will send a 2% annual funding increase directly to local public schools without raising taxes by one penny. These funds will go directly where they're needed most: increasing teacher pay and reducing class sizes. Proposition NN also increases funding for vocational and technical skills programs to prepare students for the job market.

Proposition NN is simple: by raising the TABOR revenue cap, it allows the state to keep and spend money it has already collected. It's not a tax increase, just permission from voters to use money already collected to fund public education. Over ten years, Proposition NN could increase public education funding in Colorado by as much as 50%. That's more than a "band-aid" — it's a real solution to a problem that has vexed our state for decades.
